Napier

Today we hung out in Napier for the day. And it was FANTASTIC.

We basically woke up late anddd then hung out until about 2 before we did anything. At 2, we headed out to fill our water and go to the dump station before wandering around town. The town of Napier reminded us a lot of Northport, roughly the same size and with a distinctly "small town feel" about it. The town was destroyed by an earthquake in the early 1930's and when they were rebuilding, many of the buildings were rebuilt with a decidedly "art-deco" flair, which is mostly what Napier is known for.

The architecture was quite nice and we enjoyed walking around the small city, including to its very own SUNKEN GARDENS!

When we got to the edge of the city we came upon a skate park. We watched the kids skating and biking for probably 10-15 minutes. It was awesome to watch them doing tricks, turns, and jumps around the park. I wish I'd had my camera! Jon and I decided that we REALLY hope our future children aren't into BMX biking or scooters or skateboarding... I'm not sure I could handle being a parent of a kid who was into something so dangerous at every turn!

On our way back from the skate park we stopped at the bike shop to check out their bike rental prices. While a tad bit expensive, we had a good time making friends with the owner and another guy who worked there, talking about their biking adventures. The owner told us that he had biked across the US during the winter time, including THROUGH THE ROCKIES!! He talked about how ice accumulated on his tires and hair and shins after biking all day through the mountains. It sounded insane! It was awesome to talk to him about his adventures (especially since its about time we start planning our "around the US adventures" ourselves!)

After our conversation we headed back to the van, changed into our swimwear and headed to the beach. The beach was BEAUTIFUL. I will say it was a tad bit cold...especially when I made Jon join me in the water since he'd never before swam in the Pacific Ocean! Overall lovely. We relaxed there for the rest of the afternoon, hanging out, singing, skipping rocks, and just enjoying ourselves, before heading back to the van to cook dinner.

We cooked dinner, watched a few episodes of Modern Family, and are ready for a good night's sleep :).

Jess' and Jon's highlight of the day: hanging out at the beach
