We left around 6 am after a breakfast of avocado sandwiches (yum!!!) with the hopes of arriving around 6 pm. Ugh.
We stopped several times along the route for gas, bathroom breaks, and to eat lunch. When we got out for lunch we were basically confronted with a WALL of heat. I've been in humidity before, but this was like NOTHING I've ever experienced. Insanely humid, about 90 degrees and oppressive. We ate outside (pasta and veggies as quickly as possible) before getting back on the bus. After lunch pretty much everyone (minus Jon and two of the girls) played Trivial Pursuit. I was winning by a lot until Jackie piped up from the back of the bus. Man is that lady smart! After she joined the game she pretty much crushed everyone until we gave up :-p.
In the middle of our game we were stopped at a police check and two policement entered the truck. One walked all the way up to the front without saying anything. He then proceeded to tell us he wanted water, opened our cooler, and took out someone's mango juice, said "I take this" and then he walked off. The other came on after him and asked why no one was wearing our seatbelts to which we all responded, "We didn't know we had to." He told us it was the law in Tanzania so we all put our seatbelts on. He then went up to the front and grabbed Jodi's "The Birds of East Africa" book (where she's been marking down all the birds she's seen) and started asking about it. She answered all his questions about the ones we had seen, and I think we all thought he was going to take her book, but fortunately he gave it back. After that, every time we stopped, we all made sure we had our seatbelts on!
The rest of the trip was fairly uneventful (I finished the first Harry Potter book again - I forgot how great it was :)) and everyone slept and relaxed. We arrived around 6:30 pm, which left just enough time to hand wash some clothes before dinner. We had only washed a few of our things so we had most of our packs left to wash. There were clothes drying everywhere! In the bathroom, over the bed posts, on the chairs, outside on our patio, in the closet - EVERYWHERE. We were glad to finally be able to have some clean clothes to wear for the next few days!
Our room was SO NICE. We were literally on the beach, in a lovely cabana with two double beds, a hot shower (even though we didn't need it given the crazy heat), and a balcony which lead out to...the beach!
The view from our porch :)
While we didn't have enough time to go to the ocean to check it out, we'll have plenty of time in the next few days when we're on Zanzibar!
We ate dinner in the dark outside of our truck (rice, veggies, and beef - yum!), checked our email for a hot second, and had a beer before heading off to bed.
Tomorrow to Zanzibar!
