Last night was... an experience. Our hotel was...faulty. To say the least. It seemed like the kind of place where things go wrong if they can go wrong.
As I mentioned previously - checking in had been a nightmare. The receptionist hadn't been able to match the names in his computer with our names we had written on a piece of paper. Even though we had all written our names in capital letters...which directly matched what was written on his computer screen. From there, things digressed.
- Our key to our room didn't work. We were told we were in room 302. The key said room 307. Jon had to go downstairs and have it reprogrammed.
- The room had a balcony which attached to an adjoining room. But the door to the balcony didn't close all the way, nor did it lock. Also, there was no screen or curtain on the door and you could see directly over to the next roof. Where construction workers were hard at work. Staring in the giant glass door that lead to our room.
- There were no towels in our room. Jon went downstairs again to ask for two towels. They only gave him one.
- The shower was supposed to have two glass doors, but instead it only had one, which was broken and couldn't be moved along it's track. This also meant shower water sprayed all over the entire bathroom. Because of course you couldn't move the shower head, whose nozzle spread in every which direction.
- The lights were supposed to function only if the room key was in a slot by the door. But they worked all the time. The outlets, however, only worked when they wanted to work. Which was about 10% of the time.
- We went to breakfast this morning with a working key. When we came back from breakfast our key wouldn't open the door. So again Jon had to go downstairs to have them fix it. When we came back to the room, they had apparently shut off all the electricity in the time we'd been gone, because the AC was off and none of our chargers had been charging.
- The phone in our room didn't work to call reception. So every time something went wrong, Jon had to walk down three flights of stairs (since the elevator was slow and roughly the size of a phone booth).
These were just the problems in OUR room. We also heard from Mike and Jackie that tiles in their bathroom were missing...and had been replaced by newspaper...which is totally the same thing. Between 9 passengers and our 2 drivers, we had broken lights, non-functioning AC's, more broken doors, key problems, getting locked out of our rooms, nonworking showers, etc. etc. etc. Oh, Africa. :-p
